(English lesson 9)

I would like to tell you about punctuation this time:

___________________________________________________________

In British English, single quotation marks are used.
‘Help! I’m drowning!’

In American English, double quotation marks are used.
“Help! I’m drowning!”

You can choose single or double quotation marks according to the place you work. If you work in the places like the UK and those countries which used to be part of the British Empire like Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, … they are called The Commonwealth Countries. You can ask them first if they are The Commonwealth Countries. People won’t be offended. You have to use the UK rule in those countries. While in America, you can use America rules.

____________________________________________________________________

Anyway, whether in America or the UK, these are the rules of punctuation you should keep in mind.

The things you must pay attention to:

(a) There is a comma after the word ‘said’. There is no full stop after quotation marks.

Correct sentence
She said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you anymore.’ She left the house after she said that.

Wrong sentence
She said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you anymore.’. She left the house after she said that.

(This sentence is wrong because there is a full stop between  ‘I don’t want to talk to you anymore.’ and‘She left the house..’, so the sentence is considered wrong. )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(b) Don’t leave a space in each sentence. Look at the examples below.

Correct sentences:

She said, ‘…’
I want to go home.
What do you want to do?
For example,
A bouquet of red, pink, blue and white roses.
Get out of here!

(There is no space immediately after ‘said’,  or after every sentence.)

_________________________________________________________________

Note:

(It is wrong to call this country British, Britain, or Briton. We should call this country ‘the UK’)
(We should add article ‘the’ to ‘USA’. We should write or say ‘the USA’)
